Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition and Awards Opening – 2022

After working for much of last year on my kinetic sculpture, Manifold, and installing last week at Yering Station in the Yarra Valley, the opening is coming up on Sunday the 27th of Feb.  It’s a great day to have a picnic in the grounds, or lunch in one of the restaurants, and to see loads of great sculpture.  I’ve always loved showing work at Yering Station, hope to see you there!

Manifold is one of the most complex kinetic sculpture’s that I’ve made, and I hope one of the most mesmerizing.  See https://www.instagram.com/alex.sanson/ for work in progress shots or below for some finished pics or the link for video and more info about the work.

My new work Murmuring Mk2 will be on show, come have a play!  Work in progress pics here and finished pics and video here.

In a similar theme to Murmuring, it’s very much inspired by the massed flight of starlings in a murmuration – budgerigars do a similar sort of thing which is convenient as the feathers are discarded by my kid’s budgies.

Together so much more than apart, many of us, we do become more, something new, with a life of its own, still independent but very much inter-dependent too.  Murmuring mk2 is a play on this, on the beautiful pattern and chaos that can emerge from the contradictions in a life both bound and free.

25x25x25cm, stainless steel, brass, bearings, budgie feathers.

Great new video just in!

thanks to editing by Isabelle Levien!

Split Milk wrapped up an epic 3 major events in November, had one day to turnaround between unpacking  from Strawberry Fields and packing and leaving for Spilt Milk in Canberra!  A pretty full on project, designing building and installing these sculptures for Spilt Milk Festival, but so happy with the outcome in the end. So  many challenges from designing them to hang from stage structures that hadn’t themselves been designed by the time I had to start building, to fitting several thousand individual sequins, which took nearly a week  on their own or being on tech support call for 12 hours of the event and then straight into packdown at midnight!  But a great response, worked flawlessly, looked fantastic at night.  Pretty crazy being in the middle of a crowd of 10,000 wildly excited 20 year olds trying to take photos, crazy good, but still crazy!

Strawberry Fields Festival, Tocumwal, 2017

Strawberry Fields Festival, Tocumwal, 2017 1920 1280 Alex Sanson - Sculpture

Great to be back at Strawberry Fields, fabulous atmosphere, very hot, but so nice to be by the Murray river for swimming.  Made a sculptural lighting installation inspired by the cherry tree blossom festivities in Japan, I’ve made similar installations before for the fabulous Japanese restaurants, Wabi Sabi Garden and Wabi Sabi Salon.  In the restaurants they were rusty-steel tree-like forms with many hanging lanterns of Japanese silk with floral motifs.  At Strawberry Fields, we had to go to painted steel and heavier fabric for longevity.  About 10 meters across, 6m high, 36 lanterns plus footlights, designed to make a chilled sitting, meeting eating space.

After working at many Rainbows in the early 2000s, I hadn’t been for a while, and it was really good to be back.  A beautiful site of rolling hills, amazing selection of artwork, great atmosphere, friendly people.  Installed Spherophyte , which was really designed for events like these, to sit in the middle of huge crowds, to create a little moment or focal point of inspired calm. So much great feedback including my favorite from Laura “I saw the beauty of a lotus budding open and the grace of a floating tentacled octopus … ocean meets flora”

Real Festival Sydney, 2017

Real Festival Sydney, 2017 1920 1280 Alex Sanson - Sculpture

It was such a pleasure to take my kinetic sculpture, Nebulous  up to Sydney and Real Festival.  A lovely music and arts festival on the banks of the Nepean river in Penrith, lots of great art including one of my favourite’s the interactive light bubble installation by Studio Eness.  Lots of great Feedback, thanks for having me! Also as a bonus, my mum and daughter came along for the road trip which was a pretty nice change to the usual onsite routine.  Mostly they had their own adventures but I managed to squeeze a bit of time off work to go check out the last days of Sculpture by the Sea and find a secret waterhole in the Blue Mountains for family swimming fun.
